Los Cristianos is situated in a sheltered bay in the south of the island, the harbour is the focal point for the area, once a fishing port of great importance, due to its easy links to the other Islands of La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma, which lie off Tenerife’s west coast. Just 30 mins from the airport, Los Cristianos is a great place for trips of all kinds, you can go on a trip on a sailing boat to admire the dolphins and whales or see the magical cliffs of Los Gigantes. The town has developed into a modern, thriving resort with plentiful shops, cafes and restaurants, but still somehow manages to retain its fishing village origins, while the fabulous artificial white sand beaches are perfect for sunbathing and are also host to many water sports excursions operators. Along the beachfront there are lots of shops where you will find a huge variety of authentic Spanish products, aswell as a vast array of pubs, clubs, restaurants and bars in which the town's boisterous nightlife caters for a mature, family clientele. Los Cristianos is also ideally situated for exploring the island, being so close to the main road links. Los Cristianos is the quieter neighbour of Playa de las Americas and has a bit of history. Prior to undergoing major development and becoming a booming tourist resort, Los Cristianos was a small fishing village. It has an old town centre with Catholic church, stretching from the port up to the main shopping street Avenida de Suecia.
Not too many years ago, Los Cristianos was a small fishing village and a bottle of beer cost 7 Pesetas, but it is now a major town with an international flavour. There are some first class restaurants along the narrow pedestrian walkways and a good selection of fashion and gift shops.
The main ferry terminal in the south of Tenerife is based in Los Cristianos and there are daily connections to La Gomera and La Palma. The man made beaches that are lined with sun beds and parasols, provide safe swimming havens and there are showers and service facilities plus bars and cafes and for your safety there is a beach patrol and clinic station.
A wide promenade runs along the full stretch of the resort, continuing for several miles right into the heart of Playa de las Americas. At the extreme end of the resort, next to the Arona Gran hotel, a regular market is held every Sunday. Nightlife here is not rowdy, although the town does have a couple of discos. Most people tend to relax and watch the world go by from the many restaurants in the square opposite the harbour.
